GIVE BEES A CHANCE

There are more than 20.000 species of bees in the world and they are considered the artisans of nature. Bees create life and are essential to a healthy environment and healthy economy. They pollinate 75% of our main food crops worldwide, including some of our favorite produce like apples, strawberries and tomatoes and their role is essential in maintaining biodiversity. But bees are under threat. In the last 15 years, bee colonies all over the planet have been collapsing at an abnormally high rate. Their death rates have soared from 8% to 30%, or even 80% in some cases and are associated with the following:

  • intensive farming, pesticides like neonicotinoids, parasites, pathologies, and a lack of food resources (due to increased monocropping, loss of roadside/field flowers, earlier mowing of hay meadows, etc.)
  • changes in seasonal weather which are causing problems for bees in finding food and places to nest

This is feared to have terrible consequences not only for the bees but also for our food and economy since almost 30% of the world’s food depends on pollination, and we will have 1 billion more mouths to feed by 2030. In other words, the whole ecosystem is linked: the health and future of bees is equivalent to the future and health of the planet and humanity. Based on all of the above, biodiversity is a key factor in guaranteeing the life and protection of our natural environment and the wellbeing of our communities. Within this frame, Blossom implements a special corporate social responsibility program supporting the charitable organization “The Bee Camp”. It is the first organization in Greece that aims to protect urban biodiversity and their vision is to inspire people to make cities a better place for themselves and for the pollinators!
